In a sea of dark spot correctors, it’s hard to determine just which one will work best for black skin. While our melanin is great at giving us our dark colour and protecting us from the sun’s harmful rays, it also causes us to develop dark spots whenever our skin suffers trauma.
Acne and hormonal change are known to trigger excess melanin production known as hyperpigmentation.
In my case, it’s the former. I have mentioned on this blog several times that I have a tendency to touch my face a lot. And while I wash my hands frequently, it’s still impossible not to transport dirt and bacteria to your face.
Acne also comes with consequences. The minute I clear it up, I’m left with dark spots on my face. Not only are they unsightly, they’re just annoying.
So, I set out to find an over-the-counter product that would help me clear up the hyperpigmentation.
My dermatologist back home in The Bahamas had recommended a product that was very effective. However, I could only get it by prescription.
What I tried
So, I headed to my local CVS and Walgreens to look for some products. I started off with the Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair. It was a decent price point, had a nice, sleek packaging and smelled great.
I used it consistently for nearly two months, but saw absolutely no results. I decided that I wouldn’t use it anymore.
I then moved on to a product that I had read about on Amazon called Porcelana Dark Spot Corrector. There were mixed reviews about this product. Most people boasted that it did indeed work in getting rid of the dark spots, and apparently, it did so rapidly.
The problem is, it left serious acne in its wake. I have sensitive skin, but I was so determined to get rid of these dark spots, that I lied to myself and said, I won’t break out.
The Porcelana started working within days, I kid you not. I couldn’t believe I was literally watching my dark spots fade before my eyes. But, just as I started celebrating, I noticed that small, pus-filled bumps starting to form on my face. What the hell?
At the time, I was drinking a lot of juices, so I wasn’t sure if it was the drinks or not. But, I noticed when I stopped using the product and kept drinking my usual juices, the acne would disappear. The minute I started using it again, the acne returned.
Many online reviews warned that this would happen. The cream has an Elmer’s glue like consistency and it had a chemical smell that I just did not enjoy.
So, I made up my mind that I was going to throw it away. But, not before doing a YouTube video warning about this product.
And the winner is . . .
Just as I was losing hope, I found myself in the food store hygiene aisle staring at Ambi. Now, where I’m from, Ambi has a bit of a bad reputation because people tend to abuse this product to turn their entire skin lighter.
But, after seeing some positive reviews on YouTube, I decided to give it a go. I am so happy I did. The product started working within days, which really shocked me.
I don’t exactly love the smell, but it’s not as bad as the Porcelana. The best part is, it works and it does not leave acne in its wake.
The cream cost under $10 and was totally worth every penny. I plan to use this product to get these dark spots under control completely.
