I’m Rogan, creator of This Bahamian Gyal™. I built my YouTube channel from 0 to 250K subscribers, and I share real strategies and behind-the-scenes insights to help creators grow.
But beyond YouTube, there’s a lot more to who I am.
This is my behind-the-scenes list — a look at how I think, how I move through the world, what I value, and what fuels my passion for helping creators succeed. Some of these things are light, some are deeply personal, and all of them are true.
1. I’m Insanely Guarded About My Private Life
On my YouTube channel, I get asked personal questions all the time. Am I married? Do I have a boyfriend? Do I have children? What do I do for a living? I find that the less said, the better. I let my content entertain my audience. Not my personal life.
2. I Worked As a Journalist in The Bahamas
I worked in radio, television and newspaper. I’ve done it all – news anchor, newspaper columnist, editor. In fact, this is where I learned the art of storytelling. It shaped everything I do on YouTube.
3. Whenever I Get Angry at God – Like Really Angry, I Write Him Letters
Sometimes, they are the most disrespectful letters ever. I am surprised he hasn’t struck me with 10 bolts of lightning yet. Days later, I’m on my knees apologizing and begging for forgiveness. When I die, my family is going to find those letters and have a good laugh and cry.
4. I’m Deeply Introspective
I am constantly questioning my life, my purpose. I question what God placed me here for. I wonder if I’m making a difference in the world, particularly through my YouTube channel. That introspection shows up in how I think about content, purpose and impact.
5. I Don’t Have a Lot of Friends
There are a lot of people who want to be my friend, but I have always prioritized having a handful of really good friends over dozens of people who should never be even placed in the friend category. My circle is so small it looks like a full stop.
6. I Can Be a Bulldog in An Argument
This is especially true if someone lies on me or misrepresents what I said. If you’re going to quote me, quote me correctly – especially in online spaces where context frequently gets lost. It’s not unusual for me to defend my position in the comments section, particularly when dealing with someone who is committed to misunderstanding what I’m saying.
7. I Want To Act in a Movie
Indie or Blockbuster. Doesn’t matter. I love acting and I have serious comedic chops. I also want to direct a short film. But, one thing at a time.
8. It Is My Dream To Be Interviewed By Oprah Winfrey
Granted, I think Oprah interrupts her subjects far too frequently, but I still consider it a serious badge of honor to be interviewed by her.
9. I Love the Wayans Family. All of Them
To this day I watch A Low Down Dirty Shame and The Wayans Brothers repeatedly. Classics.
10. I Despise Bad Smells and Poor Hygiene
I’m extremely sensitive to smells. So, if you smell bad, I will tell you.
11. I Love Doing Outdoorsy Things
I enjoy hiking, going to the beach, going to amusement parks, going for trail walks, going for solo walks by the river – all of it.
12. I’m a Homebody
Despite my love for the outdoors, I’m a homebody who loves watching old sitcoms from the 90s and 2000s like Seinfeld, the Jamie Foxx Show, Living Single and Girlfriends. I also adore The Twilight Zone, Columbo and Tales from the Crypt. I secretly jump for joy when my friends cancel plans, especially the day of an event. I immediately strip off my clothes, wipe off my makeup and slip into bed to watch my favorite shows. There’s nothing like watching Law & Order SVU under the covers.
13. I’m Very Introverted
People never believe me when I say this because I’m so outgoing on social media. In no way am I pretending on social media – that is my personality. But, I am also extremely reserved in real life.
14. I Love to Paint
Most of the paintings in my home were done by me. I absolutely love art.
15. I Pray For People All the Time
If I see a person crying or looking downcast, I secretly pray for them. Every single day of my life, I am praying for someone unbeknownst to them. If someone leaves a comment on my YouTube channel saying that they are going through a hard time, I pray for them.
16. Don’t Waste My Time
I have a serious problem with people wasting my time. This is a huge trigger for me. It’s disrespectful.
17. I Think I Can Finally Admit That I’m A Workaholic
I’m not proud of it. My family and friends used to tell me this all the time and I thought they were just lazy. But, now, I realize how much work consumes my mind. I dream about creating content and building my YouTube channel, but I know I have to slow down sometimes.
18. I Don’t Like Rude, Arrogant People
I watch how people treat others, especially those they deem to be beneath them. If someone demeans a server in a restaurant or a janitor, I will speak up. I don’t care about the consequences
19. I Don’t Like People Who Try to Derail Me From My Goals
If you don’t believe in me, keep it to yourself. I have a thriving channel despite multiple people trying to discourage me. I also live to prove people wrong.
20. I I Love Horseback Riding
One day, I’m going to be a millionaire, and I will be able to afford to buy my own horses and ride them whenever I want. I feel free when I’m riding.
21. My Greatest Fear
I have several – some so scary that I refuse to even mention them. But, one of my greatest fears is being homeless.
22. I Often Wonder If YouTube Will Go Away
I really hope it doesn’t, because it has truly changed my life and the lives of so many content creators. But, I am always thinking about what’s next and if something bigger/better will come around that will make YouTube obsolete. Remember MySpace? Vine? Yeah, point made.
23. My Favorite YouTubers
Some of my favorite YouTubers are: Kelly Stamps, Shameless Maya (I learned so much from her), Aba & Preach, Brooklyn Bloom (she doesn’t do YouTube anymore, but I always loved her editing style and sense of humor).
24. I Still Use British Spelling
Even though I now live in the United States, I just can’t let go of British spelling – at least in my personal writing. If I text you, expect to see the words: organise, colour and prioritise. I can’t help it.
25. My Goals for YouTube
My immediate goal is to grow my channel to 1 million active subscribers, earn six figures (minimum) every month and be known for educating, entertaining and inspiring my audience. I used to want overnight success. Now, I don’t. I am quite content growing steadily. That would allow me to grow into the role. So far so good.
I hope this list gave you a deeper sense of who I am beyond the content.
