It’s hard to think of Washington, DC without thinking of the president, power, politics and, of course, the monuments. But, there’s so much to this city than that.
As someone who is always on the hunt for new experiences, I can tell you that DC has more than enough unique places and things to do that you simply must visit and try.
This past weekend, I headed to one of my favourite areas, Georgetown, which is located in northwest DC.
I have been to the area three times and am always captivated by its energy and beauty. But, even on those three occasions, I mainly stuck to the main thoroughfares. This time, I made it a point to get to know its core.
Here are six places you need to put on your list immediately.
1. The Exorcist Steps
If you’re a fan of the original 1973 horror film, The Exorcist, then you’re going to want to visit the Exorcist Steps.
These steps were featured in the film in its final scene where the Catholic priest, Father Damien Karras takes Regan’s demons in him and throws himself head first down the stairs in an act of self-sacrifice.
These creepy 97 steps are located at the corner of Prospect Street and 36th Street NW. They are by far some of the creepiest steps I have ever seen. I visited in the daytime and got a bit weirded out. It’s probably because I know the history of the steps. They’re also very steep and located in a shaded area. I couldn’t imagine going there alone in the night.
In 2019, DC’s Historical Preservation Review Board granted historical landmark status to the steps.
So, go ahead and step into history on your next trip to Georgetown.
2. Visit The Transformers House
Did you know that Bumblebee and Optimus Prime lived in Georgetown? Well, they do.
On my way to the Exorcist Steps, I passed a home on Prospect Street NW with two of the biggest robot sculptures I have ever seen. The home belongs to Georgetown University brain scientist, Newton Howard.
I met Howard while sitting in front of the robots taking pictures. I asked him if I could take a picture of him and he graciously obliged.
The robots have not been there for long – just since January. But, they might not be there for much longer. Howard’s home is in a historic section of Georgetown and the Georgetown Board doesn’t take too kindly to seeing humungous robots perched outside of its homes.
The Board says it’s “inappropriate in the Georgetown Historic District.”
Howard says he is willing to take his fight “all the way to the highest level of our court system” if need be. I hope he does because I absolutely love the sculptures and I think it is invigorated the area.
For now, the sculptures are there and you should take advantage of it.
3. The 9/11 Memorial Garden
If you spend the day in Georgetown, you might get overwhelmed with the high energy of the city. If you, like me, need to recharge, I would suggest this next place.
I stumbled across the most beautiful, not to mention, peaceful garden in the city.
The garden is located at 3626 N Street NW. At first, I thought the site was the backyard of a wealthy homeowner. But, it quickly became apparent that it wasn’t.
The garden was created in memory of the staff and alumni who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. I think it was one of the most beautiful ways to remember the lives that were lost.
As a nature lover, I would strongly advise visitors to be respectful of the surroundings and not litter or create unnecessary noise. This is, after all, a sacred space.
When I visited this site, I was the only one there and I loved how peaceful it was.
It’s a beautiful place to recharge.
4. An Instagram-Worthy Spot
Listen, I’m a blogger and content creator, so you’d better believe I’m always looking for beautiful places to take photos. One such place is the Call Your Mother deli.
Located on 3428 O Street NW, the deli serves up a variety of foods and drinks. But, most bloggers go there for what’s on the outside.
The deli is absolutely gorgeous. It’s pink and green pastel hues draw throngs of young women from all four corners of the Earth. It makes for great Instagram shots and just looking at the building will make you happy.
5. Stroll Through The City And Look At Houses
One of the best things about Georgetown is the charming homes it has.
Georgetown is a very expensive area, thus its real estate is quite costly. But, it doesn’t cost anything to look at the homes and get ideas for your own home.
The entire area is charming, serene and sun-filled, particularly during this time of year. You don’t even need company to enjoy the sites. You could walk the area alone and have a wonderful time.
One of my favourite things to do is to take photos of colourful front doors and flower planters like the image below.
6. If You’re A Plant Parent, You’ll Go Wild In This City
One of my favourite boutiques to visit isn’t even a clothing boutique – it’s a plant boutique.
The very first time I visited Georgetown, I was captivated by a pop-up nursery and plant studio called REWILD.
It’s a quaint indoor boutique located on 3270 M Street NW. It’s another one of my favourite oases in the city. It always feels like stepping into a mini jungle in the middle of the concrete jungle.
They feature the most adorable plants and the customer service is great.
