The Adventures Of This Bahamian Gyal: My Trek Through Downtown Nassau

Nassau is hands down one of the coolest cities in the world. Don’t debate me on this.

I’m an island girl to the core and while my city may not be the biggest in the world, it’s certainly big in character. There’s really nowhere on earth quite like it.

I once heard a politician say that the beauty of being downtown is that you can’t stand on a corner for more than 10 minutes without running into someone you know. He was so right.

It’s not often that I get to trek through my beautiful city. But, this week, my brother, Rashad and I decided to do just that. It was actually accidental. We were doing some business in the heart of the city and after we were finished, we decided to take in the sights – something we rarely get to do.

Anyone who has been here knows that Nassau is a colourful city. Not only are our buildings colourful, but our people and the way that we speak is also colourful. There’s no such thing as a simple conversation with us. Our accents are lively and quite humorous.

Our First Stop – Pompey Square

So, Rashad and I didn’t have a game plan, we just went where the wind took us.

Our first stop was Pompey Square, one of the most iconic landmarks in the country. The Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation sits on the site and pays homage to Pompey, a famous slave who led a slave revolt on the island of Exuma.

What I most remember about our time outside of Pompey Museum was the overzealous security guard who ran outside the museum to tell me to get my foot off of the wall. I literally was posing for a photo and he pulled up on me to tell me to put my foot down. Talk about foot patrol.

Well, all of that walking sure makes a girl thirsty. So, Shaddy and I decided to stop for a quick drink at an Irish pub called Shenanigans.

Unfortunately, I can’t vouch for the food or drinks because we didn’t make it inside. I was too hungover from just looking at the Guinness beer on the wall.

A Pop Of Colour

One of the things I love about Nassau is how colourful the arcades are.

Look at this fool. He knows damned well he can’t afford those sunglasses.

What’s With These Signs?

Where is the “e” at the end of ‘Welcome’? Please note, they serve grouper finger not grouper fingers. So, don’t complain when you get one piece of fish. You’ve been warned.
That word, kiddies, is supposed to be Cuban. Many Bahamians still pronounce Cuban as ‘Cube-bee-yin’.

That’s A Whole Lotta Ass

I couldn’t resist picking up this license plate while in a store downtown. In my family, I’d definitely be the smartass or the wise ass. Which one do you think Rashad would be?

Here I am trying to figure out which one I am.
Back that ass up. The Ass Family: Wise, Smart, Lazy, Kiss, Dumb, Jack. Yup, that about covers it.
Posing with a pirate. At least, I think he’s a pirate. Nassau was overrun with pirates back in the day and was once regarded as a Pirate’s Republic. 
Stopping for a quick bite at Smuggler’s Restaurant next to the Pirates of Nassau museum. Get the spinach dip, you’ll love it.

So Much To See

There’s so much more to do and see in Nassau. I can’t wait for my next jaunt downtown. I’ll be sure to show you all of the cute little spots that you’ve got to visit.

    • Oh, there are a lot of things to do and see downtown. It’s not huge…but it’s very interesting. You should take a horse and carriage ride while you are here.
