I was cleaning up my computer yesterday and stumbled across this old photo. I couldn’t help but smile.
This photo was taken on Paradise Island on the grounds of the One & Only Ocean Club back when I was working for a local radio and TV station.
The women to my left are blogger, Ianthia Smith-Ferguson (hiding under her hat) and Happy Foods 242 creator, star and producer, Sasha Lightbourne.
If you talked to these two women today they would tell you that the three of us have been through the fire. We didn’t always get along, but I always respected their hustle.
We came up in a newsroom plagued with equipment shortages, staff shortages, malfunctioning hardware, long hours and a career ceiling that hovered two inches above our heads. Despite the problems, we always persevered and became like family. A highly dysfunctional family, but family nonetheless.
We operated by one mantra – Make It Happen. If the cameraman failed to press record on his camera and we needed to produce a story, we made it happen.
When the news car broke down on our way to an important assignment with the prime minister, we made it happen. When the computer crashed after writing a four-page headline story, we cursed and carried on, but we made it happen.
These are some of the most driven women I have ever met in my life. They were ambitious back then and they are ambitious today. I am so proud to see how each of us has evolved in our professional and personal lives and I’m anxious to see the next step in our careers.
It goes to show that you never know who you’re working next to and who they’re destined to become.
Who would have thought?
