Interested in dating Bahamian men? Well, there are eight things you must know before starting a relationship with one of the Caribbean’s finest.
Before we begin, please know that many of these are generalisations. These are my personal observations, as well as observations from many Bahamian women who have dated Bahamian men for years. In fact, some of their responses were so brutal that I could not include them in the list.
So, if you’re travelling to The Bahamas and hoping to hook up with a Bahamian man, there are some things you need to know.
Ignore at your own risk.
1. Bahamian Men Love To Flatter
It does not matter what you look like or what you are shaped like, a Bahamian man will highlight your best asset and put it on a pedestal. Think Pepe Le Pew with a Bahamian accent. You don’t have to say a word.
Bahamians are very vocal when they see something that is visually pleasing. Sometimes, it’s cute, other times it’s downright nasty. I often hear overweight women tourists remarking about how good Bahamian men make them feel. That’s because a good number of Bahamian men love a curvy woman. They tend to shun women on the skinnier side. It’s not uncommon to hear someone remark, “bone for dog, meat for man.” Translation: I want someone with meat on her bones.
2. They Don’t Take Rejection Well
I have never seen a group of men do a 180 so quickly. A Bahamian man can go from heaping praises on you one second, to verbally tearing you down the next if you reject him.
I have to point out, though, that it’s how you reject him that will elicit that response. If you let him down easy, he’ll go easy on you. But, if you turn around and dis him, the gates of Hell will fly open and craters will form beneath your feet. Hell hath no fury than a Bahamian man scorned. And the worst part? They can get really loud and really petty.
3. They Don’t Care If You Have A Boyfriend
Bahamian men don’t care if you have a boyfriend, a husband, are in a committed relationship for 100 years, if they want you, they will pursue you. Point blank period.
If you put up a resistance and the Bahamian man feels like he’s about to lose you, he’ll offer up a consolation prize that will get him in the door: he’ll offer to be your friend. Some women think it’s pretty harmless, I mean, who doesn’t want friends, right? Wrong. These types of guys should be avoided at all costs. A friendship is not the intended goal. A relationship is.
Bahamian men have well-earned reputations as lover boys, do you know why? Because they’re lover boys. And they can’t seem to commit to just one woman.
4. Most Of Them Are Mama’s Boys
Don’t get in between a Bahamian man and his mother. Especially if he grew up in a single parent household where she was the breadwinner, nurturer, caregiver, everything-giver.
A Bahamian man’s mother is his everything. He would kill for her, die for her, give his money to her. That’s his mummy. If you want to have any hopes of dating a Bahamian man, do not, under any circumstance, think you can disrespect his mother and survive the relationship. And if he has sisters, it’s all over.
5. Bahamian Men Are Professional Catcallers
You have not experienced catcalling until you’ve walked down a street in The Bahamas.
Bahamian men are the catcalling kings of the Caribbean.
Let me tell you from personal experience that construction workers aren’t the only ones who catcall. When I lived in Nassau, I have been street harassed by politicians, pastors, garbage collectors, bankers, police officers, high school boys, you name it.
You’ll recognise the catcalling by the sounds Bahamian men make. You’ll either hear them say “ssk ssk ssk.” You’ll know it when you hear it, or they’ll pucker their lips and make a loud kissing sound. That will also be followed up by them commenting on your face or your shape. If you reject them (see section 2).
6. They’re Very Self-Sufficient
Many Bahamian men grow up without their fathers present, so they learn a lot from the mothers. A traditional Bahamian mother will teach her son how to clean, cook, wash his clothes, iron, fold, you name it. Bahamian men are extremely self-reliant. Even if his mother does some of the chores, he knows how to do them in her absence.
Because the Bahamian man’s mother is his first teacher and greatest example, he will compare you to her.
For example, if you don’t know how to cook, he may start to question your womanhood. You cannot get away with making homemade spaghetti for a Sunday meal. It won’t fly in the long term. It’s cute in the beginning, but several months in, he will be seeking a “real woman” who knows how to cook.

7. Bahamian Men Make Everything Sexual
Bahamian men love to talk about sex. Like. All. The. Time.
And they have a tendency to make everything sexual. It doesn’t matter what you’re talking about, they will find a way to worm sex or some sexual reference into the conversation.
Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s annoying, but most times it’s just nasty and uncomfortable.
Bahamian men remind me of predators in the wild, like when a cheetah spots a gazelle. A cheetah will look its prey up and down, squint its eyes, lick its lips and go in for the kill. Bahamian men are the same way when they want a woman. They are constantly hunting.
8. Bahamian Men Love To Sweetheart
Sweethearting is The Bahamas’ national pastime, and in some instances, it’s the most stable relationship that some Bahamian men have.
For those of you unfamiliar with sweethearting, it simply means, cheating.
Bahamian men are always on the prowl for the next best thing. But, they don’t like letting a good thing go. So rather than divorcing their wives or leaving their girlfriends or children’s mothers, they will just get another girl to be their side chick.
Some Bahamian men have multiple families. They might have a steady marriage with their wife of 10 years, but have children with another woman.
Musicians often talk about this cultural phenomenon in their songs and it’s considered somewhat of a running joke. So, for any woman who is hoping to date a Bahamian man, please know that he may eventually take a sweetheart.
Well, there you have it folks, eight things you must know before dating a Bahamian man. In all honesty, I probably could have written 88 things to know.
Despite the negatives, Bahamian men are incredible. They have a strong sense of loyalty and love hard when they do. Many of them are also helpful without expecting anything in return.
