Today, The Bahamas celebrates its 47th day of independence.
Typically, Bahamians gather at the site of the historic Clifford Park to celebrate this incredible occasion with spectacular shows, fireworks and entertainment. However, COVID-19 has changed all of that.
This year, many Bahamians are marking Independence Day at home because they are not being allowed to gather at the beaches due to the virus.
I have said it before and I’ll say it again. No matter where I am in the world and no matter where I live, I will always remember my country and have a great a profound respect for my nation.
The Bahamas is not in the best place economically right now because its borders have been closed for months to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
As a country that relies heavily on tourism – particularly tourism from North America – this has been deeply troubling.
But, Bahamians are incredibly resilient and I know they will bounce back stronger than before.
I want to wish all of of my fellow Bahamians throughout the world and wonderful Independence Day. Hopefully in 2021 we can double down on the celebrations.
Happy Independence Day!
XOXO,
This Bahamian Gyal
