Punch Columnist, Rogan Smith won the P. Anthony White Columnist of the Year award on the weekend for her multi-award nominated column, This Thing Go With Sense.
She received the award at The Bahamas Press Club’s 5th annual Media Awards at the British Colonial Hilton on Saturday. This year’s theme was, “Media In The Digital Age.”
This was Smith’s second nomination in a year and her first win. She was also nominated for the Cyril Stevenson Award for Outstanding Political Journalism.
“I was so grateful to be nominated for those two awards, but I was especially thankful to win the P. Anthony White award. I was a huge fan of Mr. White’s work when he was alive. He was one of the main reasons I read The Punch with regularity. So, it felt incredible getting an award named in the honour of the man I have admired for so long,” said Smith.
“I’m thankful to The Punch for giving me such an amazing platform. I don’t take it for granted. As always, I’m thankful to all of my readers who have been with me for over two years and I thank the Bahamas Press Club for the nomination and subsequent win.”
During the awards ceremony, veteran broadcast journalist, Ed Bethel received the Etienne Dupuch Lifetime Achievement Award. Former Prime Minister, Hubert Ingraham also received the Trailblazer Award for introducing private broadcasting in The Bahamas. Two of his daughters accepted the award on his behalf.
The Bahamas Press Club also remembered the journalists who passed away, including broadcaster, Calsey Johnson, former ZNS Assistant General Manager, Colin Trotman Jr., and late TV producer and trade unionist, Robert Newton Thompson II.
