After 40 years in the business, legendary political cartoonist, Stan Burnside officially stepped away from his drawing table today.
The final iconic cartoon, “Sideburns”, which is simply an inversion of his last name, became a household name as it often poked fun at politicians, Bahamians and the general goings on of the day.
Burnside’s final cartoon appeared in The Nassau Guardian today with a simple headline: Sideburns Out.
While at the newspaper, he churned out pieces six days a week.
The simple cartoon often featured characters that the Bahamian public came to love, including the Tourism Goose, the famous Shack Rat and his little annoying friend, who often served as the antagonist.
Each cartoon was packed with truth, humour and Burnside’s insatiable wit.
Many believed they hadn’t truly made it until they appeared in Sideburns.
I, for one, often marvelled at how he was able to capture an entire story in a one-liner.
Burnside has created more than 10,000 cartoons since 1979.
It is unclear what Burnside’s future holds, but we at This Bahamian Gyal wish him the absolute best.
He will truly be missed.
